The Renaissance Man

Hubert & Bodhi

A Tale of Tools & Tails

What is a Renaissance man? The first time I heard this term from a friend, I didn’t grasp the definition. I thought I was an “Antic” man coming from the Middle Ages century. Then I looked at the meaning in the dictionary: “a present-day man who has acquired profound knowledge or proficiency in more than one field.” That summarized pretty well my journey in life.

Welcome to Tools & Tails Care, where we blend the art of handyman craftsmanship with the joy of pet care! But who’s behind this unique concept? Meet Hubert Pilloud, your very own Renaissance Man, a modern-day jack-of-all-trades with a story as captivating as the services offered.

A Village Upbringing

Growing up in a charming village in Switzerland, my days were split between the enchanting woods and my neighbors' bustling farms. From a young age, I was surrounded by a menagerie of animals—cows, chickens, turkeys, pigs, goats, horses, and dogs. One of my earliest and most vivid memories is of Lulu, the St. Bernard who delivered fresh milk to the village dairy by pulling a cart with two big milk cans. Despite my initial fear (I was a little kid and he was so big, tall, and strong), Lulu taught me the joy of animal companionship.

The Builder's Journey

A small wooden treehouse built on a platform between two large trees with leafless branches, featuring a window and a slanted roof, surrounded by a natural outdoor setting.

Ever since I can remember, I’ve been creating things. As a child, I built my own toys and gigantic treehouses—so impressive that the police once asked us to take one down for being too big! My crowning childhood achievement was a 25-foot-tall kite made from 2x2s and trash bags, which flew high thanks to a rope and heavy-duty gloves.

From Workshop to Skies

A cluttered workshop or garage with shelves filled with various items, tools, and supplies. There are cans, boxes, and equipment scattered on surfaces and the floor. The room has a large window on the left, letting in natural light.

In my teenage years, I honed my skills in my father’s workshop, learning the trades of tinsmithing, roofing, and plumbing. Summers were spent working to fund my flying lessons, and weekends found me in garages, learning all about car mechanics. Between 16 and 19, I rebuilt a wood airplane from scratch with friends, flying tourists over the Alps and the majestic Matterhorn.

Fighter Pilot and Beyond

At 22, I became a fighter pilot, a career that spanned 26 exhilarating years. But my hands-on passion never faded. In my 20s, I built a speakeasy bar in my godfather’s farm, complete with framing, plumbing, electrical work, and more. This venture led to the creation of “Target For Tonight,” a private club that became a local legend.

New Skills, New Country

A cozy room with wood paneling and a slanted ceiling, featuring striped lounge chairs, a small table with magazines, a wooden wardrobe, and a robe hanging on a stand. There is also a small white side table with a vase of pink and white flowers, and a bookshelf with books.

At 28, I bought and remodeled my first house in Switzerland, complete with a luxurious sauna. Eight years later, I sold the house and took an apartment for a year to focus on my MBA studies, which I completed in February 2005 with Cum Laude honors. A week later, I moved to America.

In the U.S., I discovered the wonders of drywall (I finally understood why people in movies could punch holes in walls!) and continued to perfect my remodeling skills, earning a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship.

A Passion for Animals

Throughout my journey, animals have always been a constant. My loyal yellow lab, Bodhi, was not just a pet but a beloved therapy dog for 11 years. His companionship enriched my life and inspired me to help at local ranches and sanctuaries, caring for animals with disabilities.

A Multifaceted Craftsman

Beyond building and flying, I’ve embraced various crafts and certifications: from being a Top Gun instructor for the Swiss Air Force to becoming a Liaison Officer under Swiss Diplomacy, as well as a certified yoga instructor, massage therapist, reflexologist, Master Scuba Diver Instructor, and Certified High Performance Coach. Being of service and sharing my passions, especially with youth, is a core part of who I am.
